?? The Israel Question – No Ban Despite Mounting Pressure

What’s drawing criticism today is not who has

Israel, currently fundraising to reach the 2031 Rugby World Cup, has never faced a suspension from World Rugby – despite widespread calls from campaigners, politicians, and even rival nations. Spain has threatened to boycott competitions if Israel are allowed to participate.

The United Nations has accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, citing four of the five acts defined under international law, including killing civilians and inflicting conditions designed to destroy the population.

Yet, World Rugby has so far remained silent. The only time the body has commented was in 2023, when South Africa’s rugby union cancelled an Israeli team’s invitation to a tournament. World Rugby insisted the decision was “not discriminatory” – but Tel Aviv Heat CEO Pete Sickle accused them of failing to properly investigate.

FOUR COUNTRIES BANNED

❌ Spain – Disqualified from 2019 & 2023 Rugby World Cups

Spain’s Rugby World Cup dreams have repeatedly ended in chaos.

2019: Spain, Belgium and Romania were sanctioned for fielding ineligible players, with Russia benefitting.
2023: Spain qualified for France but were later thrown out again after World Rugby found they had used a player with a forged passport.

Romania took their place, and Spain’s hopes were left in tatters for a second time.

? South Africa – Banned from 1987 & 1991 Rugby World Cups

During apartheid, South Africa became a sporting outcast. Rugby’s governing body barred the Springboks from the first two World Cups, ensuring they played no part in 1987 or 1991.

The boycott ended with the collapse of apartheid, paving the way for their emotional return in 1995 – when South Africa not only hosted the tournament but lifted the Webb Ellis Cup, uniting a divided nation.

? Russia – Banned from 2023 Rugby World Cup

In 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, World Rugby acted swiftly. Both Russia and Belarus were suspended from all international competitions, including Rugby World Cup qualifiers.

The governing body issued a strong statement condemning the war and declaring solidarity with Ukraine, effectively shutting the door on Russian participation in France 2023.

⚡ The Double Standard?

Critics say World Rugby’s swift condemnation of Russia and Belarus contrasts starkly with its silence on Israel. With other sports bodies debating boycotts and sanctions, rugby risks being accused of selective morality.
