“They’d score a lot of tries” – Who would make a dream Team GB rugby sevens lineup for Tokyo 2020?

We’ve picked our ultimate Team GB Sevens team that would definitely win gold at the 2021 Olympic games in Japan. Players who have been selected the Lions were not considered.

The men’s rugby 7s teams will play across the first three days (25-27 July 2021) with the finals set for Wednesday, July 28 2021.

Ajinomoto Stadium (Tokyo Stadium) will host the sevens rugby games. The venue was also used during Rugby World Cup 2019 for eight games including the tournament opener and the Bronze Final. The capacity is near to 50,000.

TEAMS WHO HAVE QUALIFIED: Argentina, Australia, Canada, Fiji, Great Britain, Japan, Kenya, New Zealand, South Africa, USA, Korea.

Jonny May (England): A prolific and pacey finisher, he has reached 29 Test tries. Despite his club ’s poor results, May also scored a total of 30 for Leicester over just 44 matches in Premiership and European competition.

Jacob Stockdale (Northern Ireland): He burst on to the international scene a few seasons ago and hasn’t looked back. To date he has scored 16 tries in his 26 Ireland appearances.

Marcus Smith (England): His undoubted talents would find a natural home in the shortened form of the game. His passing ability and knack of manipulating space and defenders would be prizes assets.

Jack Nowell (England): Few players score a hat-trick on their Rugby World Cup debut, but Nowell did just that when helping England to a 60-3 win over Uruguay in 2015. He'd be the perfect player for the sevens line-up.

Jamie Ritchie (Scotland): The Scot would be the beast up front. A tackling machine, with massive go-forward and ferocious clear-outs at the ruck – Sam would give GB a hard edge that all good teams need.

Sam Underhill (England): The England flanker has an all-round game well suited to Sevens. Turnovers at breakdown, high work rate and great handling skills all add up to a big impact for Team GB.

Jonny Gray (Scotland): Every sevens team needs a kick-off and lineout specialist. No one fits that bill better than Scotland’s sensational Gray. His aerial ability and all-round athleticism is up there with the best. Tackles, turnovers, off-loads and bags of enthusiasm – Gray would bring a medal-winning game to a Team GB Sevens team.
