Rugby World Cup 2027: One Spot Left in Historic 24-Team Line-Up
The 2027 Rugby World Cup will be the biggest in history, increasing from 20 to 24 teams. All but one of those places have now been filled.
The final berth will be decided in World Rugby’s Final Qualification Tournament (FQT) — a four-team round-robin competition in Dubai from November 8–18, 2025.
Competing for the last ticket to Australia are Samoa, Namibia, Belgium, and Paraguay. Each team will play the others once, with the side topping the table on competition points securing qualification.
Samoa and Namibia Facing World Cup Heartbreak
For the first time in the professional era, Rugby World Cup regulars Samoa and Namibia could both fail to qualify.
Samoa have appeared at every tournament since 1991, while Namibia have featured in every edition since 1999. However, with only one place available, at least one of them — and possibly both — will be watching from home when the tournament kicks off Down Under.
Such an outcome would be historic, potentially opening the door for Belgium or Paraguay to make their World Cup debuts.
How Samoa and Namibia Reached the Final Qualification Tournament
Samoa’s path to the Rugby World Cup 2027 qualifiers took an unexpected turn when they were stunned by Chile in their two-leg play-off. The South Americans pulled off a major upset, winning 63–44 on aggregate to reach just their second World Cup.
Namibia, meanwhile, progressed to the FQT after a dominant 86–29 victory over the United Arab Emirates in the Asia/Africa play-off earlier this year.
Belgium claimed their place by finishing fifth in the 2024 Rugby Europe Championship, while Paraguay advanced after defeating Brazil 70–43 on aggregate in their South American qualifier.
A Historic Opportunity for Rugby’s Emerging Nations
The Final Qualification Tournament 2025 represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Belgium and Paraguay to make rugby history. With two of the sport’s traditional qualifiers under threat, the FQT could deliver one of the most unpredictable finishes in modern World Cup qualifying.
The action kicks off in Dubai on November 8, with the decisive final round scheduled for November 18. By then, the world will know which nation has claimed the 24th and final place at the Rugby World Cup 2027 in Australia.
