Trailfinders confirm signing of Women's Rugby World Cup winning Black Fern

Widely regarded as one of the most complete forwards in the modern game, Ponsonby’s journey to the top has been defined by grit, adaptability, and excellence at every level. Beginning her rugby career as a bustling loose forward, she transitioned to hooker in 2020—a move that has since redefined her trajectory in elite rugby.

Born in Gisborne and raised on a farm in Taihape, Ponsonby’s sporting path began not on the rugby field, but on the netball court. A fierce goal defense, she represented Manawatū age groups and even featured in Massey University’s senior side by age 16.

After a breakout campaign with the Manawatū Cyclones in 2017, Ponsonby secured a scholarship to Lincoln University, where she emerged as a dominant number eight for Canterbury. She helped them win three consecutive Farah Palmer Cup Premierships (2018–2020), amassing an astounding 26 wins from 27 matches. However, her defining moment came in 2020, when former Black Fern and Canterbury High Performance Manager Amanda Murphy encouraged a positional switch to hooker. The transformation was swift and successful.

Her positional switch paid dividends almost immediately. In 2021, Ponsonby earned her call-up to the Black Ferns’ Northern Tour squad. Though not used in the matches against England, she featured in both tests against France, showcasing her tenacity and technical acumen despite the team’s heavy defeats.

Her contributions were immediate, stabilising the lineout and adding muscle to the breakdown. The experience, though humbling, helped elevate her game to a new level—particularly in the tight exchanges and maul defense. Ponsonby was then named in World Rugby’s Women’s XV Dream Team of 2023 and become a critical cog in New Zealand’s powerhouse forward pack.

Now, Ponsonby brings her elite-level experience to Trailfinders Women, joining fellow Black Fern Alana Bremner in the ambitious squad.
