United Rugby Championship: Play-off permutations confirmed as fight heats up for top spot

The race for the United Rugby Championship (URC) play-offs is so brilliantly going down to the wire after continuous months of action.

Following Leinster and Ulster claiming spots in the Champions and Challenge Cup Finals, the URC returns this weekend with the final two rounds of action on the horizon. However, there is plenty to play for.

For the sides who claim the top four spots, they will have home advantage in the quarter-final stages. To say it’s tight would be an understatement.

We look at what is at stake in the final rounds of matches and how other results may disrupt the top eight qualification.

Currently, first place is the desired position for any side still in the running. This is because whoever claims top spot will have home advantage throughout the play-offs, which also includes the Grand Final in late June.

Both Stormers and Glasgow Warriors have already got their ticket for play-off rugby, despite the Cape Town outfit suffering a surprising defeat against Connacht in recent weeks.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s action, Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson said: “As we get closer to the play-offs, the stakes get higher each week, and this is a crucial match in the context of our season.”

Two sides who are also aiming for home quarter-finals are defending champions Leinster and Lions, and the pair meet on Saturday afternoon at Aviva Stadium. Still chasing play-off spots also include Cardiff, Ulster, Bulls, and Munster, who are all in contention.

It’s more likely to be five sides chasing the elusive last four spots, due to the fact that Leinster and Lions face each other. Irish sides Munster, Ulster, and Connacht, Cardiff and Bulls will be the remaining sides battling for the four last play-off spots.

Cardiff Rugby head coach, Corniel van Zyl, added: “We are in a strong position and we feel like it’s still in our hands and we can control it.

“It is clichéd, but it is one week at a time, and this game is the most important. We want to get as many points out of the game as we possibly can.

“It’s going to be a big test. Glasgow are a great team, they are well coached and do a lot of the basic stuff well and know how to put you under pressure.

“We know it's going to be a challenge, but that’s something we embrace and look forward to. The next two games (Glasgow and Stormers) are tough, but if we do proceed to the next stage, we will hopefully be used to the intensity.”

Stuart Lancaster’s Connacht side, boosted with the confidence from their travels in South Africa, welcome Munster to Galway on Saturday evening, and then Clayton McMillan’s side, the Johannesburg Lions, seven days later.

For van Zyl’s Cardiff side, they face Glasgow on Friday evening, as they’ll aim to keep Welsh involvement in the competition following missing out last year to West Wales rivals Scarlets.

A hard-fought win in Llanelli kept the Bulls in seventh, but the Pretoria outfit has favourable remaining fixtures against Zebre, Parma and Benneton Rugby at altitude. Securing two bonus-point wins could see them qualify for a home quarter-final.

Challenge Cup finalists Ulster, after a torrid 2024-25 season, have vastly improved this season, and this is despite suffering back-to-back defeats in their last league outings. However, they’ll be boosted following a 29-12 win against Exeter Chiefs in Europe.

They entertain the top two in Belfast in the next two rounds. On the remaining fixtures, head coach Richie Murphy said: “It’s a massive couple of weeks for the club and for the players.

“We haven’t been in this situation where we are fighting on two fronts, trying to get into the top eight (of the URC), and that’s where our focus is this week.”
