Victor Matfield names current star as ‘greatest ever’ Springbok

Etzebeth has already established himself among the giants of Springbok rugby, becoming South Africa’s most-capped Test player after surpassing Matfield’s long-standing record.

But Matfield believes his former second-row partner has now gone even further.

Speaking about Etzebeth’s remarkable career and continued influence on the world champions, the former Springbok captain suggested the 34-year-old deserves to be considered right at the top of the country’s all-time list.

“He’s probably the best Springbok of all time,” Matfield said.

It is some endorsement from a player who knows exactly what it takes to dominate at Test level.

Matfield won 127 caps for South Africa between 2001 and 2015, lifted the Rugby World Cup in 2007 and was regarded as one of the finest lineout forwards of his generation.

Etzebeth made his Test debut in 2012 and briefly played alongside Matfield during the veteran lock’s international comeback.

Since then, Etzebeth has become a central figure in one of the most successful periods in Springbok history.

The towering forward played key roles in South Africa’s 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cup triumphs, while also establishing himself as one of the most feared physical presences in the international game.

He overtook Matfield as South Africa’s most-capped player in 2024 and has continued adding to that remarkable total.

Etzebeth's longevity is only part of the argument.

At his best, the lock combines enormous physicality with elite lineout ability, relentless defensive work and a competitive edge that has made him almost undroppable under Rassie Erasmus.

And for Matfield, his sustained performances at the highest level have now put him above even some of the most iconic names in Springbok history.

That is quite a list.

Francois Pienaar, John Smit, Bryan Habana, Joost van der Westhuizen, Fourie du Preez and Siya Kolisi are among those who could all stake their own claim to being South Africa's greatest.

Matfield, though, appears to have made his choice.
