Ben Earl could walk away from England after 2027 Rugby World Cup

England star Ben Earl could make a stunning switch to rugby league after the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
The Saracens forward has been linked with moves to Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves.
Both Super League clubs are reported to be keeping a close eye on Earl. Any move is expected to take place after the World Cup in Australia.
However, no deal has been agreed at this stage.
Earl remains under contract with Saracens until 2029 after signing a new long-term deal with the club.
That means Wigan or Warrington would need to reach an agreement with the Premiership side before making their move.

Ben Earl opens door to code switch
The 28-year-old has made no secret of his love for rugby league.
Ben Earl even admitted that he watches more league than union and would regret never testing himself in the 13-man game.
“I love league, I watch more league than union, but I don’t really know the ins and outs,” Earl told RugbyPass.
“I’m on every fantasy and every tipping competition. I’m a massive student of the game and picking people’s brains all the time.
“I would have loved to do it. If someone said, ‘What would be your one regret?’ it would probably be not giving it a go at one point.”
Ben Earl also stressed that he remains committed to Saracens and England.
However, he suggested a switch could appeal if he ever felt that he needed a new challenge.
According to City AM, his comments have caught the attention of both Wigan and Warrington.
England departure
A move after the 2027 World Cup would almost certainly end Earl’s England career.
Players based outside rugby union are not eligible for Test selection.
Earl is expected to remain a major part of Steve Borthwick’s plans heading into the tournament. His pace, power and ability to cover the entire back row have made him one of England’s most important players.
He also represented the British and Irish Lions during their 2025 tour of Australia.
A switch would still come with risks.
Rugby league demands a different level of fitness, positioning and defensive work. Earl would also be 29 by the time the World Cup ends.
He has acknowledged that issue himself, admitting: “If union is a young man’s game, then league is a very young man’s game.”
