Scotland star Richie Gray banned and Finn Russell may have to leave

Richie Gray has been ruled out of Scotland’s meeting with Argentina after the lock was given a three-week ban for dangerous play.

An independent disciplinary committee found the Glasgow forward had acted recklessly when leading with an elbow that caught the head of an opponent during Sunday’s loss to New Zealand.

Gray will miss two games for Glasgow.

Those come at home to Leinster on 26 November and the 3 December date with Zebre in the United Rugby Championship.

“There was absolutely no malicious intention,” said Scotland assistant coach Pieter de Villiers prior to the verdict.

The committee explained Gray’s “excellent disciplinary record” had reduced the six-week entry point for such an offence by three weeks.

Meanwhile, Pieter De Villiers also confirmed that Finn Russell, whose partner is due to give birth shortly, remains with the group but could have to return to France at any point.

He said: “He’s still with the squad. There’s still no news with regards to the baby. We’re planning with him.”
