Following their historic 23–18 victory over England, their first ever win against the side, Italy travel to Cardiff to face Wales on Saturday, aiming to extend their momentum. A win would secure a third victory in this year’s tournament, something Italy have never achieved since joining the competition in 2000. However, head coach Gonzalo Quesada will have to do without Ferrari, who was injured during the match against England.

Ferrari was part of the Italy Under-20 squad in 2013 and 2014 before earning a place in the senior national team in 2016. He was selected for the final 31-man squad for the 2019 Rugby World Cup and later included in Italy’s 33-man squad for the 2023 edition. He reached his 50th Test cap against France on 6 October 2023 during the tournament.

The 31-year-old Benetton Treviso prop, who has 73 international caps, has been a key figure in Italy’s strong performances this Six Nations. His contribution to the scrum has helped the side compete effectively against every opponent, including during their landmark win over England.

With no chance of finishing last heading into the final round, Italy are already guaranteed a positive tournament and will aim to hold on to fourth place, potentially finishing ahead of England, by defeating Wales at the Principality Stadium.

In a statement, the Italian Rugby Federation confirmed the injury:

“Simone Ferrari, who came off in the 51st minute of the match, suffered a sprain to his cervical spine.

“The player will not be available for the match against Wales on Saturday, March 14. Ferrari will return to Benetton Rugby and continue his rehabilitation with his club’s medical staff in collaboration with the national team staff.”

No replacement has yet been called up for the experienced prop.
