Steve Borthwick has hit back strongly at criticism surrounding the controversial inclusion of Benhard Janse van Rensburg in England’s latest training squad.

The Danny Care-led backlash began after the former scrum-half said the decision “doesn’t sit right” with him, arguing that players such as Max Ojomoh and Ollie Lawrence should be given priority because they are English-born and have dreamed of representing their country.
Care questioned whether Janse van Rensburg’s selection undermines the exclusivity of international rugby after the Bristol Bears centre qualified through World Rugby’s five-year residency rules.
But Steve Borthwick was unapologetic when asked about the criticism.
“I pick the players I want to pick,” Borthwick said. “I consult with my coaches and make my decision. World Rugby rules are very clear about when players become eligible.”
Borthwick added that Janse van Rensburg’s ability to play both inside and outside centre, along with his outstanding character, made him an obvious choice.
The England coach’s blunt response makes it clear he has no issue ignoring outside opinions if he believes a player can strengthen his squad ahead of this summer’s Nations Championship.

Electric pace has not been enough to earn Henry Arundell a place in the squad, likely due in large part to a disappointing Six Nations campaign.
That comes despite an impressive season for Bath, with 22 tries across club and international rugby.
While he crossed the line regularly, his ill-discipline against Scotland proved costly and contributed to England’s decline in that match.
He also struggled to make an impact against Ireland and at times appeared too reliant on his speed, although he remains a young player with plenty of time to improve.
Still only 23, Arundell has huge potential and could easily return to the England setup in the future. For now, though, Steve Borthwick has opted for Adam Radwan and Noah Caluori instead.
