Three players who were 'blamed' for Lions series defeats, including Jonny Wilkinson

The Welshman made a mess of a two-on-one during the series decider between the Lions and the Springboks in Cape Town.

The Scarlets full back had fellow countryman Josh Adams outside him with just one defender standing between them and the try line, however Williams dummied and took the contact.

Had Williams given the pass, Adams would have had a clear run to the line from 30 metres out in the first half to potentially take the tourists into a 3-17 lead.

On the incident, former Lions fly half Ronan O’Gara said: “It probably came down to Liam Williams not hitting Josh Adams outside him to score. Those decisions cost you. In cup rugby, it’s imperative you take your points.”

Following full time, head coach Warren Gatland added: “A 2-on-1 with Liam Williams and Josh Adams, he should have given the pass probably. You get one or two chances at this level and you’ve got to make the most of them because you’ve got to be clinical when they come around.”

The second test against Australia, on 7 July, saw the Lions lose 35–14 at the Docklands Stadium.

Wilkinson was blamed by many for defeat after throwing a long pass inside his 22 that was intercepted by Joe Roff. This was seen as not only the turning point in the match, but the entire test series.

A standout Lions tour is truly the only thing missing from Wilkinson's incredible CV, which included multiple Six Nations, Champions Cups, Premiership and the Rugby World Cup.

During the 2nd Test of the 2009 Lions series in South Africa. The Lions were on fire for the 60 minutes, then with South Africa coming back into the game replacement fly half Ronan O'Gara came on and had a nightmare cameo, costing 10 points and the series.

The first act of O'Gara's nightmare appearance was to get run over by South African number 8 Pierre Spies, but Tom Croft was covering him and made the tackle.

The second act was to get run over again, this time by centre Jaque Fourie, and this time the cover could not prevent O'Gara's tackling frailties from costing the Lions a try as Fourie went over and Morné Steyn converted and South Africa took the lead.

The Lions did however claw the score back to level, but then in the final minute came O'Gara's third act of the match which was very costly. O'Gara put a high ball and then made a "clumsy" error running into Fourie du Preez in the air which led to a penalty for South Africa which Morné Steyn booted over with ease at high altitude, which won the Springboks the match and series, and was the worst moments of O'Gara's career.
