The top 10 unexpectedly great signings this season so far

Obviously, there’s still a lot of the season to go, but even after six games, we can see quite a few shocks in this vein. Players who have been unexpectedly great.

So here are the top five most surprisingly good transfers of the summer:

For a decade he had been the standout player at Jersey and then Bedford — he was named Championship player of the season in May. He is now playing in his first season in the Gallagher Premiership at the age of 28. Operating at No 12, he has had Lima Sopoaga inside him and Elliot Daly outside but has not looked out of place. Everything he's done looks competent and efficient; his passing looks grooved, he tackles well and he runs good lines. He also always looks composed and assured.

After failing to nail down a place at Leicester, the diminutive hooker has shone so far this season for the Bears. His performance in the lineout has been good, hitting his jumper with most of his throws, giving Pat Lam's side another great platform to attack from.

Joining from Munster, where he failed to really make an impact, in the summer, the South African forward has put in a series of powerful displays for the Cherry and Whites. He's shown himself to be dependable at the lineout and also scored a great try on his debut against Bristol.

After a tough time with Edinburgh, Weir has made the most of his opportunity at Sixways after penning a one-year deal with the Warriors. The Scotland international, who came with no expectation, has been Worcester's general while also giving his team a reliable goal kicker. He's scored 47 points in five appearances so far, scoring three tries along with seven conversions and six penalties.

Despite Dean Richards' men sitting at the foot of the table, Williams has been an outstanding addition to the impressive Falcons backline since joining from London Irish in the summer. Replacing fan favourite Juan Pablo Socino, who left for Edinburgh, the centre has scored three tries in his first six outings, which has led to him being dubbed a future England international.
