Edinburgh 24-19 Scarlets:  Hosts scrape bonus point win

A scrappy first half saw Scarlets take control, but a strong half-time team talk sparked Edinburgh into life. The hosts played with greater tempo after the break, turning the tide to secure a crucial bonus-point win.

Scarlets created the first real opportunity just before the eight-minute mark. A slick attacking move in Edinburgh’s half ended with a cross-kick to the wing, which was intercepted and knocked on by the home side. Referee Peter Martin deemed it a genuine attempt to catch, awarding Scarlets a scrum inside the Edinburgh 22. As the phases built, it looked certain they would open the scoring, but strong Edinburgh pressure forced play back towards halfway.

Edinburgh threatened themselves approaching the 20-minute mark. A scrum penalty handed them a lineout in Scarlets’ 22, and they attempted to rumble over from a driving maul. Scarlets held firm, forcing Edinburgh to shift the ball wide. After several phases camped on the line, Scarlets won a relieving penalty and swung momentum back their way.

The visitors soon made it count. A dominant scrum provided centre Macs Page with space to break from halfway and race in for the opening try. Carwyn Legatt-Jones added the extras to make it 0-7 after 25 minutes.

Scarlets struck again soon after. A superb break down the far touchline exposed weaknesses in Edinburgh’s defensive shape before quick hands moved the ball across the 22. Second-row Sam Lousi powered over in the corner. A brief TMO check confirmed the grounding, and another successful conversion saw the visitors double their lead.

Edinburgh responded almost immediately. Though Scarlets restarted strongly, defensive pressure allowed scrum-half Ben Vellacott to seize possession on halfway. Spotting space, he burst clear and sprinted under the posts for the hosts’ first try. Ross Thompson converted to reduce the deficit to seven with ten minutes remaining in the half.

The momentum had shifted. Edinburgh pressed again, pinning Scarlets back inside their 22, but resolute defence denied them a second score before the break. A missed drop-goal attempt from Scarlets with the clock in the red closed the half, the visitors leading but with Edinburgh firmly back in the contest.

Scarlets began the second half on the front foot but failed to capitalise. A messy kick-and-chase exchange saw the ball bounce kindly for Edinburgh, who launched a rapid counter-attack. Quick hands and powerful carries carried them the length of the field, with captain Magnus Bradbury finishing the move to level the scores.

Sensing their opportunity, Edinburgh struck again just two minutes later. Slick interplay released Vellacott for his second of the evening. Thompson’s missed conversion left the hosts five points clear, setting up a tense final quarter.

The contest remained relatively low on infringements, though Edinburgh full-back Harry Paterson was shown a yellow card in the 55th minute for a deliberate knock-on that likely prevented a Scarlets try. The visitors made their numerical advantage count. After patient phase play five metres out, the ball was spread wide to Joe Roberts, who finished in the corner. Despite appeals from the home crowd for a forward pass, the try stood. Legatt-Jones missed the conversion, leaving the scores locked at 19-19 with just under 20 minutes remaining.

Then came the decisive moment. Paterson, freshly returned from the sin bin, charged down a Scarlets clearance and dotted down to restore Edinburgh’s lead entering the final ten minutes.

Scarlets pushed desperately for a late equaliser, but Edinburgh managed possession smartly in the closing stages. As the clock ticked into the red, a penalty allowed the hosts to wind down time before the final whistle confirmed their fourth URC win of the season.

Speaking after the match, Sean Everitt praised his captain: “He’s an important leader for us,” he said of Magnus Bradbury, who was named Player of the Match after spearheading the comeback.

Despite being outnumbered, Scarlets fans made themselves heard from the first whistle. Renditions of echoed around the Hive throughout the contest, often out-singing the home support.

2. A Rules Clarification
Shortly after the early intercepted cross-kick, a member of the Scarlets coaching team was seen in discussion with assistant referee Holly Davidson, seeking clarification on the legality of the attempted catch. The animated exchange drew interest from those nearby.

3. URC Origin Round
The fixture marked the URC’s Origin Round, celebrating grassroots rugby. Representatives from local clubs formed part of the pre-match festivities, waving flags as the players ran out. Players also wore socks reflecting their grassroots clubs or schools — a subtle but meaningful tribute to their rugby beginnings.

4. Tuipulotu’s Return
Centre Mosese Tuipulotu made his long-awaited return after nine months out with a serious knee injury sustained against Connacht in May 2025. Following surgery and extensive rehabilitation, he marked his comeback with a composed performance. Everitt said:

“I was very happy with where he’s at at the moment. Obviously, a little bit rusty, as expected. Just happy that he got on the field tonight. He’s been out for nine months. There are other players who’ve been out with that same injury for over 12 months, so I think he’s done incredibly well.”

His family, including brother Sione, were in attendance to witness the occasion.

5. A Centurion Milestone
Prop Boan Venter celebrated his 100th appearance for Edinburgh. The 28-year-old South African, who debuted on 20 February 2021, will depart at the end of the 2025/26 season to join the Emirates Lions. Family and friends marked the milestone with special “Centurion” hats in the stands.
