Wales Sevens Star to Leave Ospreys for Fresh Start in Italy

Wales Sevens player Ben Cambriani has announced his upcoming move overseas, after agreeing a deal to join Zebre Parma. The 23-year-old becomes the latest promising young star to leave Wales, as the move sees Cambriani leave the Ospreys in favour of Zebre.

Cambriani took to social media, to voice his excitement ahead of his move to Italy. Cambriani posted; “Really excited for the next chapter of my career out in Italy, ‘grazie'” The versatile back makes the move to Ospreys’ United Rugby Championship rivals ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Despite never making a full breakthrough into the Ospreys squad, Cambriani has previously achieved international recognition. He established himself in the Wales U18s set-up as a winger, and helped his side secure back-to-back victories over England U18s in 2018. He has also broken out for Wales on the sevens rugby circuit, touring to eight competitions, after his debut in Las Vegas.

Cambriani has been relatively overlooked in the Welsh XVs game. Despite putting in impressive performances for Swansea RFC in the Welsh Premiership, Cambriani was never able to make a solid breakthrough into the Ospreys squad. He was lent out on loan to Ampthill, where the versatile back made the 2021/22 RFU Championship Team of the Season at Outside Centre.

With Italian heritage, Cambriani makes the move to Zebre for the next chapter and becomes the latest home-grown player to leave one of the four Welsh provinces. However, unlike recently departed Joe Hawkins, Cambriani has not achieved Wales senior caps for Warren Gatland’s side. This sees Cambriani remain eligible for a 1st XV call-up despite playing overseas.
