Women's Six Nations: Ireland 54-5 Scotland - Historic day at Aviva Stadium

It marked the first standalone women’s Test at the famous Dublin venue, and the home side ensured the historic day ended in emphatic fashion.

Ireland entered the match sitting fourth in the table, one place ahead of Scotland, with five points separating the sides. The hosts wasted little time asserting themselves. Hooker Cliodhna Moloney crossed in the fifth minute before Robyn O’Connor added a second just three minutes later. Reliable kicking from Dannah O’Brien had Ireland 14-0 ahead inside ten minutes.

The Irish dominance continued throughout the opening half. Moloney thought she had grabbed a second try before the TMO intervened, briefly denying Ireland a seventh score, but Aoife Wafer soon powered over to restore momentum. By half-time, Ireland held a commanding 47-0 advantage, with Scotland unable to gain any foothold in the contest.

The second half slowed in pace, though Ireland remained firmly in control. Brittany Hogan crossed for her second try of the afternoon just after the hour mark, with O’Brien again adding the extras to push the score to 54-0.

Scotland finally found reward in the closing moments when Aicha Sutcliffe capitalised on Ruth Campbell’s sin-bin absence to score her first Test try. Helen Nelson’s conversion drifted wide, leaving the final score at 54-5.

The result lifted Ireland into third place in the final standings, while Scotland finished fifth.

Player of the Match Aoife Wafer once again underlined why she is regarded as one of the brightest stars in world rugby. The Harlequins flanker scored twice in a devastating first-half display, continuing the form that saw her named 2025 Women’s Six Nations Player of the Championship.

Moloney also impressed on a memorable afternoon for the experienced hooker. The Exeter Chiefs forward, who earned her 50th Ireland cap earlier in the tournament against England, opened the scoring and provided her usual energy around the breakdown.

At fly-half, Dannah O’Brien controlled proceedings superbly. Her seven successful conversions brought her tally to 17 for this year’s championship and 65 overall in the Six Nations.

Despite the difficult afternoon, Aicha Sutcliffe provided Scotland with a bright spark late on. The Glasgow Warriors back took her chance well to score her maiden international try and ensure Scotland avoided the shutout.
