1. Introduce a Captain’s Challenge
Cricket, tennis and rugby league have all shown that giving players a limited opportunity to challenge decisions can add drama without disrupting the flow of the game.
Rugby already relies heavily on technology, so why not let captains have a say?
Our proposal:
- Each team gets one Captain’s Challenge per match.
- If the challenge is successful, they keep it.
- If it’s unsuccessful, they lose it.
- Challenges can only be made by the captain and only for clear, reviewable incidents such as knock-ons, touch decisions or foul play.
It would give teams confidence that obvious mistakes can be corrected while cutting down on constant unsolicited TMO interventions.
