The German Rugby Federation has held preliminary discussions with Guinness Pro12 over the possibility of its national team joining what started off as the Celtic League.
Swiss-based billionaire Dr. Hans Peter Wil, who amassed his fortune from running a health drinks company, is according to The Rugby Paper ready to bankroll the idea.
The Pro 12, who also reportedly offered a place in the league to South African side the Cheetahs, are exploring various different ways to help them pave the way for better TV deals.
An expanded tournament will allow organisers to revolutionise the Pro 12 by splitting the teams into two conferences, with a knock-out last eight.
It could include as many as eight countries – including Ireland, Italy, Scotland, Wales, USA, South Africa and Germany by 2020.
