Ireland 16-9 Italy: Schmidt’s men edge out Italy in tense Pool D clash

The scoreline says it all, as Ireland had to fight tooth and nail to narrowly defeat a rejuvenated Italian side. One try proved the difference in the end, and the result sends both Ireland and France through to the quarter finals.

The Six Nations Champions showed their World Cup credentials by grinding out the result and holding on to their slender advantage despite being a man down for the final eight minutes.

Keith Earls scored the decisive try in the first half, and Italy were unable to make the most of some great chances to score one of their own.
