Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus has confirmed Pieter-Steph du Toit and Damian de Allende have been released from the squad ahead of next weekend’s clash with Australia.
The experienced pair have returned home and will not feature against the Wallabies in Perth on Sunday, September 27.
Erasmus has given both players time away to spend with their families following South Africa’s demanding four-Test series against New Zealand.
The Springboks boss believes there is enough cover within his travelling squad to cope without two of his most experienced players.
Du Toit and De Allende released
Du Toit and De Allende have both played major roles for South Africa and were heavily involved during the recent series against the All Blacks.
However, Erasmus has decided the pair will not be required for the one-off Test against Australia at Optus Stadium.
Their absence will also give the Springboks an opportunity to look at other combinations as preparations continue towards the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
South Africa will now turn their attention to a Wallabies side Erasmus expects to provide a very different challenge.
Erasmus wary of Australia
The Springbok coach highlighted Australia’s recent form and believes freshness could work in their favour.
“They’ll be really fresh and they’ve won four out of five of their recent matches, while we come off a tough series against New Zealand,” Erasmus said.
“But RGR and this match have nothing to do with each other. This is a completely different challenge.”
The Test will be the first meeting between South Africa and Australia this year, with the Springboks travelling to Perth after completing their four-match series against the All Blacks.
