Jonah Lomu was one of the most powerful rugby players of all time.
His incredible gym numbers show exactly why.
England star Henry Pollock has also earned plenty of attention for his strength and speed.
The Northampton Saints back-row can reportedly bench press 140kg for two reps. He can also squat 230kg for three.
Those are huge numbers.
But Lomu was on another level.

Jonah Lomu's incredible bench press

The All Blacks legend once revealed that his best bench press was a staggering 220kg.
His reported squat was even more impressive at 340kg.
RUCK has previously looked at Lomu's incredible gym records.
His reported bench press was 80kg heavier than Pollock's 140kg figure.
Of course, it is not a completely fair comparison.
Pollock is a modern back-row forward. His game is built around speed, fitness and repeat efforts.
Training methods have also changed since Lomu's playing days.
Even so, the numbers show what a remarkable athlete Jonah Lomu was.
The New Zealand winger had huge strength and explosive speed.
That combination made him one of the most feared players in rugby history.

Lomu didn't want to get too big

Perhaps the most remarkable thing is that Lomu had to be careful in the gym.
He once explained that speed was more important to him than strength.
Jonah Lomu said his body responded very quickly to lifting weights. He could gain several kilos in a short space of time if he trained too heavily.
As a result, much of his training focused on speed and explosive power.
It clearly worked.
Lomu scored 37 tries in 63 Tests for New Zealand, according to the World Rugby Hall of Fame.
He became a global star after his stunning displays at the 1995 Rugby World Cup.
Four years later, he again starred at the 1999 tournament.
The official All Blacks website has also looked back at Lomu's incredible career and his impact on the sport.

Pollock's freakish numbers

Pollock is a very different type of athlete.
Alongside his 140kg bench press and 230kg squat, the England star has been clocked at around 10 metres per second.
He has also recorded a Bronco fitness test time of four minutes and 25 seconds.
Northampton strength and conditioning coach Jason Sivil has described Pollock as a physical outlier.
Sivil has worked with the forward since he was 16.
Pollock is still only 21, so there is plenty of time for him to get even stronger.
But reaching Lomu's reported 220kg bench press?
That's going to take some doing.
