His maternal grandfather was German actor Albert Lieven, who appeared in The Guns of Navarone. Despite his 60 England caps, Flood has said he’d love to play for Germany, saying: “I have always been proud of being German. My mum is the last remaining true Lieven and she went back to Germany about ten years ago to put together a family tree so if there was a chance to connect into that it would be great.”
