The Wales scrum-half was sacked by his club Bayonne in 2013 after turning up for training drunk. Phillips incurred the wrath of the relegation-threatened Basque side by allegedly turning up drunk for a video analysis session on October 11 along with two team-mates, Dwayne Haare and Stephen Brett.
