Michael Cheika making shock return to the Gallagher Prem

Harlequins are reportedly lining up a major coaching shake-up this summer after a hugely disappointing campaign — and they may already have sounded out one of the biggest names in world rugby.

According to RugbyPass, Quins have made what’s been described as a “cheeky enquiry” for former Wallabies and Argentina head coach Michael Cheika.

The London club have endured a torrid Premiership season, losing seven of their opening nine league matches, and it’s understood they began their search for new leadership late last year. Since then, several high-profile candidates from across the globe have been linked with the role.

The outspoken Australian has built a reputation as one of rugby’s most intense and charismatic coaches.

He led the Wallabies to the 2015 World Cup final, masterminded Argentina’s resurgence during his time in charge of Los Pumas, and has also coached at elite club level with Leinster and in Super Rugby with the Waratahs.

Whether Harlequins can tempt a coach of Cheika’s stature remains to be seen — but the fact they’ve reportedly made contact shows just how ambitious their rebuild could be.
