Richard Cockerill returns to England for latest coaching role

Multiple reports this morning suggest that Richard Cockerill will join a revamped England coaching staff to assist Eddie Jones.

The appointment of the former international hooker, who unexpectedly left Edinburgh last month, is to be officially confirmed next week.

Cockerill is poised to be brought into Jones’s new management team with a remit to oversee the lineout and contact work.

The appointment will follow confirmation that Martin Gleeson is leaving Wasps to take charge of the attack

It also follows the sudden departure of Jones’s senior assistant, John Mitchell, who has been released to take up a role at Wasps.

Mitchell, England’s Forwards Coach under Sir Clive Woodward from 1997 to 2000, re-joined the black and golds having spent time with the Club as an Assistant Coach during the 1999/2000 season.

The 57-year-old’s impressive résumé also includes being United States Head Coach from 2016 to 2017 and two stints coaching Sale Sharks. Mitchell had been in charge of England’s Defence since September 2018.
