5 Talking Points: Andy Farrell names changed Ireland team for Italy clash

The opening match of Ireland's 2026 Six Nations campaign ended in a heavy 36-14 loss to France in front of a raucous Stade de France crowd.

Following the heavy defeat, head coach Andy Farrell made over half a dozen changes in his 15 to take on Italy at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday.

Included in these changes were the return of the 43-capped James Lowe, the Ulster pair of Cormac Izuchukwu and Rob Baloucoune, as well as the debut of Munster talent Edwin Edogbo.

Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey also continued their partnership at 12 and 13, with Sam Prendergast holding onto the 10 shirt for another week. Jamie Osborne, Thomas Clarkson, Jeremy Loughman, Dan Sheehan, and Joe McCarthy also continued their run in the team for a second successive week.

1: FARRELL PRAISES ROBERT BALOUCOUNE DEBUT AHEAD OF SIX NATIONS START.

Andy Farrell: "Rob, the sheer pace that he's got, it excites everyone. It's been a bit stop and start for him, it's been hard work for him. But during that period, from him coming in to start his international career to where he is now. He's learned a lot about himself and his game has certaintly come on.

For example, he's a great defensive winger. He's got a much better understanding of the game."

2: 'WHAT A STORY.' FARRELL SHARES EMOTIONAL REACTION TO EDWIN EDOGBO'S SIX NATIONS DEBUT.

Andy Farrell: "Edwin, I mean, what a story. I mean, if you look at the story, it's actually phenomenal to celebrate that with his family tonight. It's going to be joy for all of us."

"And obviously, everyone's talked about his potential. But again, I would like to reiterate that he's young as far as this type of big game experience, even at Munster. It is potential at this moment in time. This opportunity, it's gonna be what he needs to kick on with his game, we're very excited about that."

3: FARRELL WARNS OF INDIVIDUAL ITALIAN THREAT FOLLOWING WEEK ONE VICTORY OVER SCOTLAND.

Andy Farrell: "They've certainly got threats across the field. Powerful men with a ball in hand who take some managing. But I think the real threat is the collective as a team.

They play great rugby ball in hand. Everyone's connected, everyone's on the same page. Their not-too-distant history shows us that they're able to win these big games. And this is a big game for us because of that."

4: IRELAND PREPARING TO GET BACK ON THE HORSE FOLLOWING HEAVY FRANCE DEFEAT.

Andy Farrell: " A lot of it will stay with us because a lot of it, rightly so, is private enough. But as you can imagine, because of the good people that we've got in the environment, there's a bit of soul-searching for reasons why."

"We've addressed all that and got back on the horse, put the boots back on and had a couple of training sessions and got to the business end of the week now. We're ready to put on a performance that which we should be proud of ourselves."

"These types of experiences for us, although it's not nice, first game up and came second best by quite a stretch, I would have thought. But it's how we bounce back and move on from that because these experiences are going to continue to happen during the track. I believe with the squad and the wider squad that we've got, those types of occasions will stand to us."

5: FARRELL SAYS EXPERIENCED PLAYERS WILL PAVE THE WAY FOR IRELAND DEBUTANTS.

Andy Farrell: "People need to step up to show them the way of what it takes to be an Ireland international. It's up to everyone in the room, certainly our experienced guys, to show the way as far as that's concerned. Because if that's shown to them in the right manner, those two kids will follow that."
