All Blacks legend on the verge of bankruptcy

Stuff reported the application was brought by law firm Saunders Robinson Brown. Associate Judge Dale Lester reportedly excused appearances and adjourned the hearing to allow time “for a part payment to be made”.

Under New Zealand law, creditors can apply to have someone adjudicated bankrupt if they owe more than NZ$1000 and have committed an act of bankruptcy, such as failing to comply with a bankruptcy notice. Applications are often withdrawn if the debt is settled before the hearing proceeds.

Mehrtens is regarded as one of rugby’s greatest first five-eighths. The Christchurch-born playmaker represented Canterbury, the Crusaders and the All Blacks during a glittering career spanning the 1990s and early 2000s.

He played 70 tests for New Zealand and remains one of the country’s highest point scorers.

Neither Mehrtens nor his representatives have publicly commented on the matter. The court process remains ongoing and no bankruptcy order has been made.
