Statement: Scott Barrett stood down from rugby with immediate effect

The Crusaders lock will undergo back surgery and is expected to miss up to five months, ruling him out of the July Tests and likely the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry tour in South Africa.

With Barrett sidelined, Ardie Savea shapes as the frontrunner to captain the All Blacks. The experienced loose forward has already led New Zealand in the past and brings the intensity, mana and consistency needed during a crucial season.

Other contenders include Codie Taylor and Beauden Barrett, but Savea’s influence on and off the field makes him the logical choice.

The All Blacks face a demanding schedule, beginning with July Tests against France in Christchurch on July 4, Italy in Wellington on July 11, and Ireland at Eden Park on July 18. The Rugby Championship follows later in the year with clashes against Argentina, South Africa and Australia. 

While Barrett’s absence is a massive blow, it also opens the door for a new voice to lead one of rugby’s most iconic teams into a defining season.
