All Blacks star confirms hew will take 'sabbatical' from national team

All Blacks captain Scott Barrett will miss the bulk of the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season after the Crusaders confirmed he’s triggered a contract clause to take a non-playing sabbatical following this year’s end-of-season tour with New Zealand.

The 31-year-old lock is currently with the All Blacks in Edinburgh but won’t feature in Saturday’s Autumn Nations Series clash with Scotland.
Barrett picked up a leg injury in last weekend’s 26-13 win over Ireland in Chicago, and Crusaders head coach Rob Penney says the title defence will start without their powerhouse forward.
A Crusaders statement read:
“After a heavy rugby load over the last few years, Scott Barrett’s sabbatical for part of the 2026 season is now confirmed.
It mirrors Codie Taylor’s 2024 sabbatical approach. Exact return dates aren’t set yet, giving Scott flexibility to come back when ready.”
Penney told New Zealand media:
“Scott’s a legend. He’s earned this break. He’ll recharge, he loves the club, and I expect him to be around, adding value behind the scenes. When his body’s ready to go, he’ll be back in action.”
