Cadan Murley reacts to Harlequins coaching changes

The trio arrive after an extensive recruitment process aimed at strengthening the club’s performance structure and building for long-term success.

Deans brings a wealth of experience from both international and club rugby. His career includes senior roles with the All Blacks and Wallabies, alongside multiple title-winning spells with the Crusaders and in Japan.

He will join Harlequins’ board and oversee the club’s overall performance strategy, focusing on playing identity, talent development and culture. He is set to begin in July 2026.

Gilmore takes on the head coach role permanently after stepping into a senior position earlier in the 2025-26 season.

Previously defence coach, he has also held head coaching roles with Australia A, the Under 20s and the Barbarians, and will continue shaping the team’s style and environment.

Hunter will arrive in July 2026 following a successful period with Exeter Chiefs, where he played a key role in multiple Premiership finals and a historic domestic and European double.

He is expected to bring added physicality and structure to the forward pack.

Murley said the squad has reacted positively to the news, highlighting the influence of Deans’ reputation within the game.

“It’s really nice for us as players to have that clarity,” he said. “Personally, I’m excited. Someone like Robbie Deans, with his experience and his track record as a winner, is a huge addition.

"Speaking to people who have worked under him, especially in Japan, only adds to that excitement.”

He added that several players had already heard strong recommendations from those familiar with Deans’ coaching.

“A few of the boys know players who have been out there, like George Turner and Stephan Lewies, and the feedback has been really positive.

"They talk about how experienced he is and how much players value the opportunity to work under him. That makes it even more exciting for us as a group.”

While senior figures within the squad were consulted during the process, Murley stressed that the final decision rested with club leadership.

“I’m sure Dommers [Alex Dombrandt] had some chats, and we spoke with Jason and Laurie [Dalrymple] to make sure everyone is aligned moving forward. Ultimately, it’s up to them to make the right calls, and it looks like they’ve done that.”

With Harlequins currently struggling in the Prem, Murley believes the clarity provided by the new appointments can help lift performances in the weeks ahead.

“It gives us clarity and direction, which can only help. Now it’s on us as players to improve over the next few weeks. We’ve got a big game at the Principality Stadium against Bristol, followed by a great opportunity in Europe. It’s a massive period for us to get back on track.”
