Scotland’s summer tour of the South Pacific took a turn for the worse after a bruising 29-14 defeat to a rampant Fiji sidein Suva.
The hosts were in full flight, scoring four tries — through Tevita Ikanivere, Kalaveti Ravouvou, Jiuta Wainiqolo, and a penalty try — while fly-half Caleb Muntz kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Scotland responded with tries from Kyle Rowe and Tom Jordan, and debutant Fergus Burke added two conversions. But it was a disjointed and ill-disciplined performance overall, capped by Darcy Graham’s red card in the final quarter.
Here are four Scottish players who failed to fire, with both RUCK and RugbyPass ratings.
? Darcy Graham – RUCK: 2/10 | RugbyPass: 4/10
RugbyPass: “Two yellow cards, the second upgraded to red, bookended a frustrating afternoon. First infringement was marginal but the second, for an offside intercept metres from the line, killed the game. Injured his finger in the process.”
RUCK: “Poor discipline marred his performance. A needless yellow card in the first half nearly cost a penalty try, before a second infringement and subsequent red sealed a forgettable outing. Confidence clearly shaken after Lions omission.”
The winger looked unsettled from the start, perhaps still reeling from his omission from the Lions squad. Discipline fell apart with two cards — the second completely avoidable and destructive for Scotland’s late hopes.
Summary: Undone by frustration and poor decision-making. A damaging red card.
? Jamie Dobie – RUCK: 5/10 | RugbyPass: 5.5/10
RugbyPass: “Showed sharp service and good awareness in setting up Scotland’s second try, but his impact faded as Fiji turned the screw. Replaced before the hour.”
RUCK: “Found it difficult to inject tempo or structure under pressure from the relentless Fijian defence. Looked hesitant at times.”
Started brightly and had a nice assist for Tom Jordan’s try, but lost control of the tempo as Fiji gained momentum. Never quite settled and was subbed early.
Summary: Started well but faded under pressure. Lacked authority at 9.
? Jamie Ritchie – RUCK: 5/10 | RugbyPass: 5/10
RugbyPass: “Forced off early with a foot injury after briefly returning to the field. Couldn’t impact the game and his absence told.”
RUCK: “Made some key tackles before leaving the field injured on his 60th cap. A warrior, but clearly hampered.”
On his 60th cap, Ritchie showed early commitment but had to battle through injury and couldn’t make a sustained impact. His absence was felt in leadership and breakdown security.
Summary: Brave but injured. Couldn’t leave his mark in a big milestone match.
⚫ Matt Fagerson – RUCK: 4/10 | RugbyPass: 5/1
RugbyPass: “Another who struggled to match Fiji’s power and pace. Injured the same ankle that plagued him last season and was a peripheral figure before coming off.”
RUCK: “Uncharacteristically quiet. Struggled to make metres and was dominated in contact.”
Looked off the pace from kickoff, unable to gain ground or stop Fiji’s explosive runners. Another injury worry and a performance lacking punch.
Summary: Anonymous by his usual standards. Physically overmatched and injured again.
?️ Final Verdict
Scotland were undone by Fiji’s flair and ferocity, struggling at the breakdown and lacking the discipline to stay in the contest. Key players failed to step up, and Darcy Graham’s red card summed up a flat and frustrating performance. Gregor Townsend will demand a response in the next fixture — and fast.
