Currie Cup: Round 4 Preview - League blown open with just one point between 1st and 6th

Suzuki Griquas, Airlink Pumas, Toyota Cheetahs, and Sanlam Boland Cavaliers all secured impressive victories, while Vodacom Bulls and Fidelity ADT Lions suffered first defeats, and DHL Western Province remain in search of their opening win.

Key performers such as Albert Liebenberg (Griquas), Willie Engelbrecht (Pumas), Neels Volschenk (Cheetahs) and Donavan Don (Cavaliers) made their mark last weekend, showcasing their decisive pace, skill, and finishing ability that will be pivotal in the upcoming fixtures. The league has been blown wide open with just one point separating the sixth placed Griquas and the Pumas at the top of the table.

The Pumas (1st), Cheetahs (2nd) and Cavaliers (3rd) are on 11 points, whilst the Bulls (4th), Lions (5th) and Griquas (6th) sit with 10 points. The Sharks have fallen off with just one point in 7th place, with Western Province propping up the table and yet to get any points on the board.

Their forwards, including Tiaan de Klerk, dominated lineouts and breakdowns, while Danrich Visagie’s boot added crucial points.

The Lions will be keen to rebound after their first defeat of the season, a 29-10 loss to Sanlam Boland Kavaliers. The Free State Toyota Cheetahs host DHL Western Province following a hard-fought 7-5 victory over the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV in Durban. Neels Volschenk’s early try and Ntokozo Makhaza’s conversion proved enough for the Free Staters, as they dug in their heels to grind out the result. Their defensive organisation and set-piece strength will be crucial once again.

DHL Western Province remain in search of their first win of the season, after a 47-17 loss to Suzuki Griquas ensured the losing run would continue in Kimberley. Tries from Aden De Costa, Scarra Ntubeni, and Ezekiel Ngobeni offered glimpses of promise for Province, but the side struggled to maintain cohesion for the duration. Fly half Jurie Matthee will once again be key to keep Province's points tally ticking over should the Cheetahs' defense stand tall once again.

Sanlam Boland Cavaliers host the Vodacom Bulls after a confident 29-10 Round 3 win over Fidelity ADT Lions. Blitzbok speedster Donavan Don scored twice in the first half, while Xavier Mitchell and Juan Mostert added tries to secure a bonus-point victory. Fly half James Tedder was instrumental with three conversions and a penalty goal. The Cavaliers’ defence stood firm whilst undermanned due to some early yellow cards, as Boland were composed to weather the storm and overcome the Lions' pressure.

The Bulls will be determined to respond after their 41-7 defeat to the Airlink Pumas this past weekend. Riyaad Bam’s try and Boeta Chamberlain’s conversion were bright spots for the Pretoria side, but discipline and defensive lapses left them exposed. Boland’s structured attack and the Bulls’ physicality presents an intriguing gain-line battle. Don and Tedder will be crucial for the Cavaliers, while the Bulls must find cohesion on the attacking foot if they are to return to winning ways.
