The incident – an ugly flashpoint in an otherwise record-breaking 73–0 demolition – soured what should’ve been a celebration for the world champions as they wrapped up an unbeaten tour.

Referee Luc Ramos consulted with TMO Eric Gauzins before issuing a permanent red card, ruling Etzebeth’s actions as intentional. Even Rassie Erasmus admitted afterwards the decision was “justified”.

Making his record 141st Test appearance, the veteran lock is now waiting to learn his fate, with a hefty chunk of the Sharks’ season potentially gone before he even gets back onto the park.

Under World Rugby regulations, “intentional contact with the eye” carries a minimum entry point of 12 weeks, with top-end sanctions exceeding 24 weeks. In extreme cases bans can stretch as far as four years, though that scenario remains highly unlikely.

It’s been a bruising tour for South Africa’s lock department despite the on-field dominance. Three red cards in as many matches have left Erasmus and his staff frustrated – especially with Etzebeth’s flashpoint arriving at 73–0, with just two minutes left on the clock.

Etzebeth had only been on the field since the 52nd minute as part of the Bomb Squad injection, and had even crossed for one of the Springboks’ 11 tries before things turned sour.

With the disciplinary hearing looming, South Africa now face an anxious wait to discover just how long one of their biggest stars will be sidelined.
