Former England centre could soon play for Six Nations rivals

The centre is approaching the end of the three-year stand down period that would allow him to represent another nation, while also preparing for a return to English club rugby.

After two seasons with Stade Francais, Marchant has agreed to join Sale Sharks ahead of next season. His move to France in 2023 ended his England eligibility under RFU regulations, which prevent players based overseas from representing the national side.

Now back in the PREM Rugby system, the 30-year-old is once again available for England selection. With Steve Borthwick still searching for a settled midfield partnership, Marchant could emerge as a strong option for the autumn campaign.

Marchant made his England debut in August 2019, coming off the bench for Jonathan Joseph in a Rugby World Cup warm-up match against Wales.

A month later he scored his first Test try on his first start, against Italy at St James' Park, although he was ultimately left out of England's squad for the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

He played in the 2023 tournament after being selected by Borthwick. Marchant crossed for a try in England's quarter-final victory over Fiji before starting the semi-final defeat to South Africa. He also featured in the bronze medal match as England beat Argentina to finish third.

This autumn will mark three years since his last England appearance. That means he will have completed the stand down period required by World Rugby, making him eligible to switch allegiance if he qualifies for another nation.

Although born in Winchester, Marchant is understood to have Welsh family heritage. If he meets the eligibility criteria and wanted to make the move, he could become an option at outside centre for Steve Tandy's Wales.

Despite that possibility, Marchant made it clear when his Sale move was announced last November that his ambition remains with England.

"I’d love to get back in the mix for England," he said. "But I know that first I have to get back into the flow of the Prem and put in some good performances for Sale."

England return to action on 8 November against Australia, and Borthwick will soon have a decision to make over whether Marchant earns a place back in the squad despite the competition for midfield spots.
