The England playmaker, who finished the 2026 Six Nations as the national side’s starting fly-half, will miss Saints’ Investec Champions Cup last-16 clash with Castres after entering return-to-play protocols.

It’s a significant blow for a side that has leaned heavily on Smith’s control, composure and game management during a season that promised silverware on multiple fronts.

Davison setback compounds problems up front

If losing Smith dents Saints’ attacking rhythm, the news around Trevor Davison hits just as hard in the tight exchanges.

The England tighthead is set to undergo knee surgery after limping off shortly after coming on in the 21–17 win over Saracens at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The prognosis is already grim: he’ll miss the rest of the season.

Director of rugby Phil Dowson didn’t sugar-coat it.

“Trev’s not good. He’s having surgery tomorrow, so he’ll miss the rest of the season. He’s a huge part of the squad, and he’s been a big part of our success over the past couple of seasons."
