England forward stood down with immediate effect until 2027

Leicester Tigers have confirmed that England back-row Emeka Ilione will be sidelined until at least the end of 2026, dealing another blow to one of English rugby's brightest young talents.

The 24-year-old has not played since January because of a shoulder injury, with the problem proving more complicated than initially expected.

Tigers head coach Geoff Parling admitted the club had hoped for a quicker recovery, but confirmed Ilione will not return before the New Year.

"Unfortunately, Emeka's shoulder injury is complex and hasn't recovered as we hoped," Parling told the club's official website.

"He will see the specialist again in November, but for now we know that he will be out until at least the New Year."

Doctor as well as a rugby star

The injury update comes just weeks after Ilione celebrated one of the biggest achievements of his life away from the rugby pitch.

Earlier this summer, the Leicester back-row graduated from the University of Nottingham after completing a six-year medical degree, officially qualifying as a doctor.

Ilione has earned widespread admiration for balancing the demands of Prem rugby with studying medicine, often splitting his time between training, matchdays and hospital placements.

Speaking after qualifying, Ilione admitted it had been an incredibly demanding journey but one he was proud to complete, joining a very small group of elite professional rugby players who are also qualified doctors.

While his return to action has now been delayed, the additional time away from the game will allow him to continue both his rehabilitation and the next stage of his medical career before targeting a comeback in 2027.
