England legend launches Scrum & Bun burger van

Griddled halloumi, hummus, iceberg lettuce, red onion and gherkin.

The ex-Leicester Tigers front-rower, who also earned caps for England national rugby union team, has opened a burger van at the family’s Sankence Farm in Norfolk, bringing a fresh twist to post-rugby life.

Named Scrum and Bun, the venture officially launches on Friday and will serve up locally-sourced burgers from a field just off Woodgate Way on the edge of Aylsham.

Youngs, who hung up his boots four years ago after a bruising career in the front row, is now channelling that same competitive edge into building new revenue streams for the award-winning family farm — crowned Norfolk’s top farm business in 2024.

And in true rugby fashion, the menu is packed with personality.

Each burger is named after a position on the pitch. The “Scrum Half” — a nod to his brother Ben Youngs — is a single smash patty aimed at those who “prefer more chatting than eating.” The “Hooker” is billed as a solid all-rounder, while the “Tighthead” is a double patty described as “ever dependable and good looking.”

“I’ve always liked a burger,” Youngs told the Eastern Daily Press. “Youngses are not afraid to eat — and we can eat plenty. The taste testing has been the best part, and we think we’ve got a really good burger now.

“The Hooker is probably my favourite. Obviously the Scrum Half — Ben’s one — that’s the rubbish one!” he joked. “But seriously, they’re all good, and we’re really pleased with the menu.

“This is something we’ve talked about for a while, so to see it actually happening is brilliant. I couldn’t be prouder — hopefully people come down and enjoy it.”
