England player ratings vs Scotland and Steve Borthwick's men were beaten at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh.

Scotland roared back from their Six Nations loss to Italy with a thrilling bonus-point victory over England in a raucous Calcutta Cup clash at Murrayfield.

Inspired by Finn Russell’s masterful control, the hosts stormed into a 17-0 lead inside 20 minutes, with tries from Huw Jones, Jamie Ritchie and Ben White. England, chasing a 13th straight win, faltered badly, especially after Henry Arundell’s two yellow cards left them a man down for 30 minutes.

Scotland led 24-10 at half-time and stayed ruthless after the break, Jones adding a second. Despite late English pressure, the Scots closed out an emphatic, statement triumph.

England player ratings vs Scotland:

15 Freddie Steward — 6.5

Ran with the ball well from deep, however Scotland did well to not get him into too many aerial contests, so his impact was limited through no fault of his own. Defending was a bit iffy at times. Wasted a golden chance with seven minutes to go, which was a very poor moment even if the game was finished.

14 Tom Roebuck — 5.5

Both of the two tries came down his wing, albeit while England were a man down. Not massively impactful under the high ball, and didn’t offer much offensively.

13 Tommy Freeman — 5

Really didn’t do that much attacking-wise, and was pretty anonymous.

12 Fraser Dingwall — 6

Some fluid playmaking as second receiver. Not at his best like the rest of his team though.

11 Henry Arundell — 2

Two yellow cards in the opening 40 minutes is just unacceptable for a Test match of this magnitude. Two moments of extreme ill-discipline cost his team in the first half and his only saving grace is the fact that he was in the right place at the right time to dot down for England’s only try of the first half.

10 George Ford — 5.5

Ford’s game management was relatively solid but nowhere near his usual best. Made a good fake and assist for Arundell’s try. This game will unfortunately be remembered for his failed drop goal attempt that was blocked by Huw Jones, who scored a try directly from it.

9 Alex Mitchell — 6.5

Made some really good sniping runs, even if it looked like he was trying to do things on his own at times. Can be relatively happy with his effort

1 Ellis Genge — 4

Was solid at scrum time but it is hard to look past his mistake that led to Scotland’s third. Genge found himself facing his own try-line and having to deal with a Finn Russell kick through, but fumbled it and let Ben White in for an easy finish.

2 Luke Cowan-Dickie — 5

Solid, if not slightly wayward, throwing from the lineout and didn’t see too much play elsewhere. Not necessarily a bad performer but not a great one.

3 Joe Heyes — 5.5

Made a big tackle early on and made decent yards in the carry. Solid at scrumtime.

4 Maro Itoje — 4.5

Got massively outpaced on the wing for Scotland’s first try, however you can’t blame a lock too much for being slower than a centre. Simply didn’t have the desired impact, unfortunately for England.

5 Ollie Chessum — 6

Wasn’t as dominant in the air as he usually is, and didn’t carry as well as against Wales. Fairly average but not bad.

6 Guy Pepper — 5

Tried and tried but to very little avail. No real moments of note.

7 Sam Underhill — 6

Came off at half-time after a pretty unremarkable half. Put himself about a fair bit but in truth didn’t have much of a sniff. Not helped by his teammates.

8 Ben Earl — 6.5

Was actually relatively solid considering the team’s performance, with a few decent carries and playmaking. Missed a tackle from 10 metres out which was his main blemish.
