Right now, the Boks enjoy a healthy 2.42-point lead over second-placed New Zealand, and they’re nearly three points clear of Ireland. That gap could be the difference between a dream draw and a group of death when the seedings are locked in later this year.

Why the rankings matter more than ever
The draw for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia will take place in December 2025, and this time, the format is changing — big time.
For the first time ever in the professional era:
That means every Test match this season — and into next year — could directly affect your country’s World Cup path.

World Rugby has officially confirmed that RWC 2027 will feature:
Twelve teams have already qualified automatically, while the remaining 12 spots will be decided through regional qualifiers in 2025.
World Rugby Chair Brett Robinson called the upcoming tournament “the most inclusive and globally representative ever,” promising a full house with at least one nation from each region.
“We cannot wait to see which team earns the final place and joins us for what promises to be a unique celebration of rugby and Australia in 2027.”
