Leicester Tigers are reportedly set to appoint Mike Forshaw as their new defence coach following this season’s Gallagher Premiership final, according to

The move comes as current head coach Michael Cheika prepares to depart the club at the end of the campaign.

A Defensive Mastermind Joins the Fold

Forshaw, 55, is one of the most experienced defensive specialists in the game, bringing a wealth of knowledge from both rugby league and union. A former Great Britain rugby league international, he enjoyed an illustrious playing career with Wigan, Leeds, and Warrington before moving into coaching.

He became a cornerstone at Sale Sharks, where he spent over a decade as defence coach, helping build one of the Premiership’s most resilient defensive lines.

Turbulence in Wales Opens the Door

Forshaw joined the Welsh Rugby Union setup in early 2023, replacing Gethin Jenkins ahead of the Rugby World Cup cycle. However, instability hit the Welsh camp when Warren Gatland departed mid-Six Nations, leaving assistant coaches in the dark about their futures.

Despite assurances from the WRU that no decisions would be made until a new head coach was appointed, Forshaw was not included in the squad for Wales’ summer tour to Japan—with Jenkins returning to the role.

Tigers Move Fast Amid Coaching Reshuffle

Unwilling to wait for clarity from the WRU, Forshaw appears to have taken his future into his own hands. As reported by RugbyPass, he is set to join Leicester’s backroom staff as part of a major coaching reshuffle at Welford Road.

He will work alongside Geoff Parling, who rejoined the club earlier this year, as the Tigers look to build continuity following Cheika’s exit.
