Fiji eye replacement for Mick Byrne amid health questions

According to Midi Olympique, the Fiji Rugby Union has been in discussions with Azéma for several weeks and is preparing to present him with a long-term offer. The proposal would see the Frenchman take over as head coach while also giving him broader influence across the federation’s overall sporting strategy.

Fiji is reportedly willing to offer Azéma a contract that extends beyond the next Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2027, highlighting the scale of the project being proposed. If he accepts, Azéma could arrive with several fellow French coaches.

One possible addition is Romain Carmignani of Stade Rochelais. Currently responsible for the club’s forwards, he is under contract until 2027 but could potentially be released by his current club.

Another candidate is David Marty, who previously worked under Azéma at Perpignan and was responsible for the backs and defence. The pair are known to have a strong working relationship, and Marty is reportedly open to joining the project.

The opportunity represents a broad leadership role for Azéma, whose name had also recently been mentioned as a possible assistant to Pierre Mignoni at RC Toulon. The two men have worked together before, but Mignoni, who is recovering from burnout, is believed to be looking for a specialist technical coach rather than a manager.

Last week, the Fiji Rugby Union confirmed it was reviewing the position of Flying Fijians head coach while assessing health concerns involving Byrne that could affect his ability to continue in the role. The governing body had been seeking medical evaluations before making a final decision.

If the reports regarding Azéma prove accurate, it may indicate that Byrne will be unable to remain in the post. However, Byrne has disputed suggestions about his health, stating he is “all good.”
