England skills coach Kevin Sinfield has confirmed that George Martin will miss the rest of the 2025 Guinness Men's Six Nations, with the lock out of action with shoulder and knee injuries. The Leicester Tigers man was withdrawn from the team to play Scotland just two days ahead of the match, and will not be making a return in either the Italy or Wales Tests. settle in to the Six Nations!"Unfortunately he won't play any further part in the Six Nations for us." Sinfield said, at the LNER Community Stadium in York. "He's actually got two (injuries) - the knee, which has been a niggle for some time, and the shoulder as well."
"It will be the shoulder that will keep him out of the Six Nations."
"We're unsure at this stage (when he will return). We're very hopeful it won't be long after the Six Nations but there's still some medics investigating further."
Sinfield confirmed that at this stage, there is no need for the Leicester Tigers man to undergo an operation for his shoulder or knee issues. "Not at this stage, no."
Sinfield is hopeful that Martin will be back in contention before the end of the season, with both the British & Irish Lions tour to Australia, and England's tour of Argentina and USA spurring the lock on to get back to full fitness.
"We hope he'll be back." Sinfield added. "I think it's how he plays. he's that aggressive and that physical that at points his body takes the toll.
"You get better with age understanding your body, what you can and can't do with it. George is still working some of those bits out but he's done it in the way we'd like him to which is being so physical and so aggressive. Defensively he's been very good for us all the way through.
"I've worked with him some time now, within two weeks I knew he was going to be a regular international. you could just see it in his game." "We'll miss him. Attitude-wise, he's up there with the best of them with what he brings aggression-wise."
England will need to look at their second row squad depth, to find an appropriate replacement for the Leicester Tigers man. After being withdrawn late from the England team in the training week, Martin was replaced by Ollie Chessum, with Ted Hill promoted up to the bench for the Calcutta Cup match.
"I think it's an area where there's been some injuries across the Prem, second-rowers, so we lose another quality one."
"You've just had Ted in, Coles has been back with the squad and there's still plenty of competition for us but clearly George will be missed."
England's personnel count of players on the side-lines has continued to rise, with the likes of Tom Willis, Ben Earl, Tom Curry and Ollie Lawrence also taking time out from the training week. Whilst Willis is completing his graduated return to play protocol after sustaining a head injury against Scotland, the trio of Earl, Curry and Lawrence are all set to re-join back up with England for the Italy training week.
"We expect them all (Curry, Earl and Lawrence) to be in full training, early next week. One or two might be in for elements tomorrow. As planned."
"(Tom Willis is) Following protocol, as we'd expect at this point. He'll be able to train on Tuesday."
