"Good for the sport" - Phil Dowson reacts to Henry Pollock's Matchroom move

Pollock last week became the first rugby union player to sign with Matchroom Sport Agency, led by promoter Eddie Hearn.

The deal signals a shift in how elite rugby talent may be marketed, with Hearn openly outlining ambitions to elevate Pollock’s profile far beyond the traditional boundaries of the sport.

Rather than a conventional representation agreement, the partnership is positioned as a broader commercial strategy.

Hearn has suggested that increasing Pollock’s visibility, including early television appearances, will be central to building his personal brand and drawing new audiences to rugby union.

Saints boss Dowson sees at as both a positive move for Pollock, but also for the sport.

"I don't think that partnership is hugely unexpected, that someone would pick up Henry, and I think it would be good for the sport.

"We've seen the likes of Red Bull come in, Dyson invest in Bath. I think rugby's on a bit of a high, and Henry's driven some of that himself and it'll be interesting to see how that relationship grows.

"I think it can only be a positive thing to get eyeballs on them to grow the sport and make it more exciting."

Pollock’s rapid rise on the pitch has matched the growing attention off it.

Since breaking through with Northampton, he has delivered a string of standout performances, including a try on his European debut in a dominant win over Castres Olympique and a brace against the same opposition in the knockout stages.

Domestically, he marked his Premiership breakthrough with a memorable solo score against Sale Sharks.

His contributions were pivotal during Northampton’s run to the European final, highlighted by a semi-final victory over Leinster, before they ultimately fell to Bordeaux Bègles.

Despite a heated post-match incident, Pollock was cleared of wrongdoing and finished the campaign by being named Premiership Breakthrough Player of the Season.

Although external noise has surrounded the back row throughout his early career, Dowson believes the Matchroom deal will not distract the player.

"All players on the international radar are wanted by sponsors and they've got to balance up the off-field opportunities with on-field performance.

"Henry's not stupid, he knows that he's got to make sure he gets his rugby right first and then we'll try and help him balance out what he does off the field with regards to his other interests."

On the international stage, Pollock has progressed just as quickly.

After captaining England at youth level and starring in age-grade competitions, he made an immediate impact in senior colours, scoring twice on debut in the Six Nations and setting a new record as the competition’s youngest English try-scorer.

Pollock also the was youngest player selected for the British & Irish Lions squad for the 2025 British & Irish Lions tour to Australia.
