Gregor Townsend sparked debate after appearing to hit back at critics following Scotland’s heavy defeat to Ireland in the Six Nations.

Ireland pulled away from Scotland in a pulsating Triple Crown decider, running out 43–21 winners to keep their championship hopes alive while ending the Scots’ trophy dreams.

Despite flashes of attacking quality from Scotland, Ireland’s clinical finishing and control of the game ultimately proved decisive.

Townsend hits back at expectations

Speaking after the defeat, Townsend appeared frustrated by the expectations surrounding his side, insisting that supporters demanding perfect performances every week were unrealistic.

“If you want a perfect performance every week, then you're living in fantasy land.
Every team is going to have moments in the game where they don't do as well as the opposition.
Every team is going to have a performance, especially in the Six Nations, where they don't achieve the highest level of rugby.
And you can look at any team in this year's championship.
The positive was that we regrouped in the second half, and we played some excellent rugby, but it wasn't enough to win.”

Townsend pointed to Scotland’s improved second-half showing as a positive, though acknowledged it ultimately wasn’t enough to challenge Ireland.
