"If you good enough, you're old enough" - Andy Farrell reveals why he picked Henry Pollock for the Lions tour

There was plenty of hope and expectation that the fastest rising English rugby star would earn his spot on the plane to Australia, with Pollock's dream realised yesterday afternoon. Pollock's reaction clip has already gone viral across the rugby social media landscape, as the youngest Lion on the tour celebrated his success with his Northampton Saints teammates.

Pollock's name was then followed by a trio of selected Saints backs, with Tommy Freeman, Alex Mitchell and Fin Smith all set for the trip 'down under'. It was incredible scenes from the East Midlands, with Andy Farrell outlining the reasons why he selected the one-capped England international for the Lions tour.

"If you good enough, you're old enough, that's what I'm saying. I've heard a lot of stuff that is constant, really about young kids that are coming through. His confidence, he's cocky, and this is not just about Henry, this is about youngsters in general.

"But what do we want them to be? Do we want a kid to show his confidence as a 23-years-old, 24-years- old, instead of 20? It's just about the here and now, isn't it? If he's performing against the type of quality that he has been, then he's ready. He's ready to compete. I think we all see the fight in him. I think everyone can see that anyway. I'm sure he'll push all the others that didn't realize that he was coming, I'm sure that he'll relished that."

It has been a whirlwind few months for the back row, as Pollock earned his England debut in the final round of the 2025 Guinness Men's Six Nations. Coming on mid-way through the second half in Cardiff, Pollock contributed two tries in the win against Wales, in what was an emphatic statement of intent upon the international stage. Pollock carried this tremendous form back to the Saints, and his latest starring effort helped Northampton stun Leinster, and book a place in the Champions Cup Final.

However, despite the recent England honours and accomplishments against European heavyweights, Farrell has had a keen eye upon Pollock for longer than the past few months.

"It isn't just about the last month or so." Farrell said. "You as a rugby coach, you know who's on the upward curve, and who's coming through. You know who's on the verge of making test squads. But when you see a player, doesn't matter what age, performing like he has, when people have been waiting to see whether he can do it in the big games, or week after week consistency."

With plenty of discussion around Pollock after each appearance in green, black and gold, Farrell made up his own mind on the young man. Pollock has been branded a 'marmite player', in the sense that rugby fans either love him or hate him, given his unapologetic attitude and self-confidence at such a young age. Pollock has shown time and again that he has the skill-set to back up his personality, with his unique celebrations steadily becoming a trademark after the back row scores another world-class try.

"I wouldn't say (Pollock's call-up) it was certain, I wouldn't say I needed convincing either." Farrell added. "I've watched him a couple of times live and I like what I see. With all top players, he's always trying to make a difference. There's an energy, there's a bounce about him, of trying to make a difference, and that's how you tend to have big moments in the game, which have served his quality. That's what I have seen within his game, and plenty of others within this Lions squad as well."
