LIST | 2 Areas Gloucester Need to Strengthen & the Players They Could Sign to Fix Them

This is a serious issue for the Cherry & Whites. Their two primary goalkickers, Danny Cipriani (63.2%) and Billy Twelvetrees (62.4%), are ranked as the bottom two in the Gallagher Premiership in regard to success rate.

Gloucester would ideally want to keep Cipriani at fly-half due to his playmaker role in the side, meaning a goalkicker elsewhere in the backline would be the perfect signing.

An affordable option would by Coventry's Rory Jennings, who can operate at inside centre. The 24-year-old former England U20 star, who recently joined Leicester Tigers on loan, finished second top scorer in the Championship before the season came to an abrupt end.

More of a marquee signing would be 47-cap Wallabies star Matt Toomua, who is reportedly available for a loan move after being forced into a paycut by the Australian Rugby Union. The 30-year-old, who can also play inside-centre, scored 75 points in his 41 games for Leicester Tigers.

Gloucester are currently short of options in the second-row, and will only have four contracted ahead of the 2020/21 season when Charlie Beckett's short-term deal expires and Danny Drake returns to Scarlets.

They have recently signed 6ft 6in and 117kg Argentina international Matias Alemanno on a long-term deal, but more cover is required if they are to mount a serious title push.

All Black lock Bryn Evans recently departed Sale Sharks after five years at in the North West, and the early signs are that 35-year-old isn't ready to hang up his boots just yet. Certainly not a long-term solution, but he certainly wouldn't let them down as cover.

Another player who will be available is Levi Douglas, who recently joined Wasps on a short-term deal after his time with Bath came to an end. The powerful second-row still has potential to become a quality Premiership operator.

The big-money player who is currently a free agent is All Blacks star Brodie Retallick. He's a free agent after his Kobe Steelers sabbatical was cut short by the COVID-enforced cancellation of the Japanese league. However, the lock has rejected an offer from Super Rugby side The Chiefs to remain a free agent. He's reportedly having a bit of a break with his family before making his return.
