In his 395th and final appearance in Quins colours, Care was granted special dispensation by Premiership Rugby to wear the number nine shirt off the bench – a fitting tribute for a player who’s defined a generation in the league.
The 38-year-old scrum-half came on to a standing ovation with just 16 minutes to play, adding one last chapter to his incredible 19-year journey in South West London.
But while it was an emotional send-off for the England centurion, it was Smith’s electrifying solo effort that had The Stoop on its feet.
With just 20 minutes remaining, the newly-named Lion cut through Exeter’s defence like a hot knife through Devon butter – weaving past five defenders and diving in under the sticks. He calmly added the extras to nudge Quins 21-19 ahead.
A clutch penalty from the fly-half followed soon after, securing the narrow win and confirming his status as the man for the big moments.
Despite a spirited showing from Exeter – arguably one of their best displays in an otherwise underwhelming season – the lack of a fourth try denied them a vital bonus point. For Quins, the dream of sneaking into the Premiership play-offs is now officially over.
But for Smith, the message was loud and clear: he’s coming for a Lions Test jersey.
