The quest to become the highest-paid rugby player in the world game is not a goal that most stars begin their career aiming for.

Team success is the driving force behind the motivations of most players, with individual glory coming second.

The list’s combined haul is up 11% from the 2020-21 season.

#10. MICHAEL HOOPER £750k (Toyota Verblitz)

Michael Hooper - £750,000

The Wallabies skipper penned a new contract with Rugby Australia in 2018, which netted him £3.2million over five years. However, last season he took a sabbatical in Japan and is reported to have been earning £750,000 with Toyota Verblitz.

#9. OWEN FARRELL £750k (Saracens)

The England captain signed his deal a while ago. It's set to run until 2022 when he can expect to earn an increase again wherever he decides to play, assuming rugby hasn't completely decided to tighten its belt by then.

#8. Beauden Barrett - £780,000

In 2019, Barrett signed a four-year deal with the New Zealand Rugby Union, which the New Zealand Herald claims netted him £540,000 per year.

However, on his year out in Japan with Suntory Sungoliath last year, the Daily Mail reports Barrett earned £780,000.

#7. EDDIE JONES £750k (England)

The highest-paid international rugby coach. His salary pales in comparison to Manchester City chief Pep Guardiola (£20million) and England football chief Gareth Southgate (£3m).

Last year, Les Bleus' centre signed a huge contract with Racing 92, according to reports in France.

English club Gloucester were said to be looking at luring him to Kingsholm but were left disappointed when he decided to stay put in Paris.

#6. PAT LAM £800k (Bristol Bears)

The former Newcastle, Northampton and Samoa back-row will remain at Ashton Gate until at least 2023 after signing a bumper contract extension in 2019. The 50-year-old, as a result, became the highest paid rugby boss in the world.

#5. MARO ITOJE £825k (Saracens)

Signed a new deal last year that was reportedly between £750,000 and £1 million. He's one of the front runners to captain the Lions
next year and is widely regarded as the best lock in the world, with the salary to match.

#4. Finn Russell (Racing 92) - £850k

A huge pay-rise from the Parisians in 2020 convinced the fly-half to stay with Russell now reportedly earning £850,000 per season for the next three years, which makes him the highest-paid British rugby player.

#3. EBEN ETZEBETH £900k (Toulon)

The 28-year-old Springbok extended his stay at the French club in July by signing a new three-year deal with the club that will see him remain at the club until June 2023.

The former New Zealand wing or full-back become British rugby’s first million-pound player when he signed for Bristol Bears. The former All Black speedster, who deserted his international ambitions at the premature age of 23, has consistently been one of the best players in Europe since 2015.

The World Cup-winning Springboks playmaker Handre Pollard became the joint highest paid rugby player in the world alongside Piutau when he agreed to leave the Bulls in Super Rugby to join Montpellier in the Top 14 last year.
