Former Australia international Mark Nawaqanitawase could make a sensational switch to Italy ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup, despite being tipped for a return to the Wallabies.
The 26-year-old winger has emerged as one of rugby league's biggest stars following a remarkable spell with the Sydney Roosters.
However, his return to rugby union has taken an unexpected twist.
Nawaqanitawase is considering changing his international allegiance to either Italy or Fiji.
An Italian switch would open the door to a future Six Nations appearance.

Wallabies dealt major blow

Nawaqanitawase won 11 caps for Australia before switching codes in 2024.
He enjoyed huge success in rugby league, winning the NRL premiership with the Sydney Roosters and representing Australia internationally.
The winger has now agreed a two-year deal with Japan's Saitama Panasonic Wild Knights.
However, he will not be available for Australia's Nations Championship fixtures against England, Scotland and Wales this November.
His agent, Milan Volavola-Shankar, confirmed that the player informed Wallabies coach Les Kiss of his decision in July.

Italy and Fiji emerge as options

Nawaqanitawase qualifies for Italy through his family heritage and Fiji through his father.
Under World Rugby's eligibility regulations, players can apply to change international allegiance after a three-year stand-down period.
The winger last represented Australia in rugby sevens at the Paris Olympics in July 2024.
He could therefore become eligible to represent another country in August 2027, subject to World Rugby approval.
His agent confirmed that the player remains open to exploring his international options.
"With his heritage making him eligible to represent both Italy and Fiji, he remains open to all options regarding his international future."
However, his immediate priority remains settling into life in Japan.
Neither Italy nor Fiji has made a formal approach.

RUCK verdict

Australia would be losing a serious attacking weapon if Nawaqanitawase decided to represent another country.
For Italy, his arrival would be a massive statement ahead of the next Six Nations.
His pace, finishing ability and experience across both codes would give the Azzurri another dangerous attacking option.
Fiji would also benefit enormously, particularly with the 2027 Rugby World Cup approaching.
The most remarkable scenario? Nawaqanitawase lining up against the Wallabies at a World Cup on Australian soil.
For now, his international future remains undecided.
