Snubbed Springbok heads overseas, joins Top 14 giants

A two-time Currie Cup winner, Kriel has been a model of consistency throughout his time in Pretoria, earning a reputation for his pace, athleticism and all-round reliability.

Currently in Europe for next weekend’s Vodacom URC clash against the Dragons, Kriel has shared his excitement about the move abroad.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be heading there to learn French culture, to meet new people and still do the thing that I love most.

“I would like to thank everyone who contributed to my journey with the Vodacom Bulls. I’m very thankful for every coach, every player, every staff member, and every fan for making my time here so memorable.

“I’m grateful for each opportunity and the growth as not only a player but as a human being. Goodbyes are never easy, especially to something that means so much to me and a place I’ve called home for the last six years.

"It’s very difficult to say goodbye. It was a dream to play for the Vodacom Bulls since I was a young boy; I’m just thankful to everyone who made it possible for me to achieve that dream.”

Since making his debut in October 2020 on the left wing in a Super Rugby Unlocked fixture against the Griquas, Kriel has grown into a central figure in the Bulls’ professional era, chalking up 142 caps for the side.

His spell at Loftus Versfeld has been defined by remarkable versatility, having featured across almost every position in the backline.

Over 143 appearances, he lined up at fullback (41 matches), outside centre (36), inside centre (30) and on both wings (26), in addition to 10 outings off the bench.

His adaptability has placed him among the most utilised players in the current squad, with only Embrose Papier, Ruan Nortje and Johan Grobbelaar recording more appearances.

Kriel’s contribution is also reflected in his scoring record. He amassed 321 points, comprising 53 tries, 16 conversions and eight penalties, to sit 25th on the all-time list.

His 53 tries rank him ninth among the Bulls’ leading try-scorers, moving him ahead of icons like Bryan Habana, as well as current teammates Kurt-Lee Arendse and Canan Moodie.

Vodacom Bulls chief executive Edgar Rathbone paid tribute to Kriel’s impact on the team: “David has been a quintessential professional and a cornerstone of our backline over the last six seasons.

"Watching his transition from a promising talent into a world class player and a leader within our environment has been a privilege for all of us at Loftus.

“While we are naturally disappointed to lose a player of his versatility and character, we believe in supporting our players’ ambitions to test themselves in different leagues.
