"England-bound" - Sale Sharks coach departs with immediate effect

A firm fans’ favourite, the 36-year-old initially joined Alex Sanderson’s coaching ticket ahead of the 2023/24 season after a stellar playing career that saw him rack up more than 100 appearances for the club and earn ten caps for Scotland. He quickly made his mark off the pitch, leading the defensive system and guiding Sale to a Gallagher Premiership semi-final, while also taking charge during the Premiership Rugby Cup.

McGuigan’s stock rose further on the international stage, linking up with Steve Borthwick’s England staff for the summer tour to Argentina before extending his involvement through the Autumn Nations Series and Six Nations.

Reflecting on his exit, McGuigan said: “After ten incredible years with Sale Sharks, I’m hugely grateful for the memories, the people, and the opportunity… It’s been a privilege every step of the way.”

Director of Rugby Alex Sanderson paid tribute, adding: “He was a great player and he’s a brilliant coach, but most importantly, he’s a great bloke… He’ll be missed by everyone.”
